Opportunity Knocks

Control a mars rover with signal interference

Global Game Jam -- 2018

Team size: 4

My role: Designer

Timeline: one weekend

Engine: Unity

Global Game Jam 2018 was the second game jam I participated in. The theme of the jam was “Transmission,” so I worked with an artist and two programmers to create a game about controlling a mars rover with an intermittent connection.

The game is controlled with a keyboard’s number pad, and the video of the rover is set to a low frame-rate unless you turn on the signal boost, which drains the rover’s power more quickly. I wanted to create an experience that would demonstrate to the player how getting a transmission to mars to control a robot is more complex than you might expect, maybe frustrate them a bit in a way that gets them to think about it in a new way.

Here’s the game’s page on the Global Game Jam website, where you can find more screenshots and a download.
